Dr Wu-Hon Francis Leung is an IEEE Fellow cited for his contributions to operating systems, protocols, and programming methods supporting the development of distributed systems and multimedia communication applications. He received his Ph.D. in CS from the University of California, Berkeley.
He has more than 20 years’ of industrial experience in the telecommunications industry and in large-scale software development. Before joining IIT, he managed research and development projects, at Motorola and Bell Laboratories, on cellular infrastructure architecture, interactive video server, electronic switching system software, multimedia communication protocols, broadband packet switching and application oriented languages. Many of his results are quite influential. For examples, his group developed the first multimedia conferencing system based on packet switching and the switching software for the first field trial of packet voice in the public switched network. Among his 14 U.S. patents, three of them received the prestigious AT&T Patent Award which was granted to only three percent of the patents assigned to that company annually.
Earlier in his career, he served as an editor of the IEEE Transactions in Computers for a number of years. Presently, he is on the faculty of the Computer Science Department of the Illinois Institute of Technology. His research interests now center on software engineering and computer network protocols.
